If a dealer is selling hardness equipment

Two tall mineral tanks and a black brine tank of a salt-based water softener, plumbed with copper pipe in a garage.
Salt-based softener: two mineral tanks and a brine tank.
A single tall tank with no brine tank, installed in a laundry alcove next to a washing machine.
Salt-free conditioner: one tank, no salt bin.

Open the current CCR for grains. This file does not invent a number from a ranking site. A salt softener needs a drain if it is legal at the address.

If the water tastes like the plant’s disinfectant

A single black whole-house carbon tank with a control head, installed in a garage and connected to copper pipe.
Whole-house carbon tank. No brine tank.

Open the CCR for chlorine vs chloramine, then match that claim. A 42 chlorine listing is not chloramine.

If you are shopping a PFAS listing for the kitchen

Under-sink reverse osmosis: filters, tank, and a second faucet.

A pitcher or under-sink RO whose exact model is listed for PFAS under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58. The RO shop link is Waterdrop. Pitchers stay on a tagged Amazon search. We have not picked a model.

Atlanta is a surface-water / taste-and-odor file until someone types the CCR hardness line into this repo.

What Watershed publishes

Annual CCRs live at atlantawatershed.org/water-quality-reports. We did not invent a 1.1 gpg figure from a SEO page.

In late 2025 the department said odd taste and odor came from MIB and geosmin in Lake Lanier / Chattahoochee water, that those compounds are not a health call in their notice, and that they feed powdered activated carbon. Their FAQ tells households that carbon filters can help taste and odor from plumbing or fixtures.

What to match here

  • Taste/odor: carbon, after you read whether the residual is chlorine or chloramine.
  • Hardness equipment: test first.
