The in-home “water test” is usually not a test. It is a demonstration that the water contains minerals, which almost all Southwestern city water and most wells do. USGS will tell you hardness is calcium and magnesium. You do not need a stranger’s vial to establish that Phoenix publishes 10–17.6 grains per gallon.
What a certified lab is
EPA does not test your kitchen tap on request. States certify laboratories to run approved drinking-water methods. Public water systems already use those labs for compliance. If you want an independent number — especially on a private well — EPA’s instruction is to contact a state-certified drinking-water laboratory. The agency publishes a directory of state certification programs.
A certified result should name the method, the reporting limit, and the concentration. It may compare the result to a primary MCL or a secondary SMCL. That is a document you can hand to two different installers and get two specifications for the same water.
What the salesman vial is
Common kitchen-table moves:
- Drops that precipitate hardness or metals and turn the glass cloudy. The cloud is the reagent reacting. It is not “dirt the city hid from you.”
- A soap-shake bottle that will not foam. That is hardness chemistry, which USGS already described.
- A TDS pen used as a toxicity score. TDS is a secondary aesthetic/technical parameter (EPA SMCL 500 mg/L). It is not a poison index.
- A single strip dipped in the presence of a commission.
The May 2026 HomeownersHub poster described color-changing vials as the warm-up to a $10,000 quote. The vials did what vials do. They did not produce a chain-of-custody sample.
None of this means every dealer is lying about hardness. It means the demo is not fit for sizing iron media, choosing chloramine carbon, or making a PFAS purchase.
Tap Score and other mail-in kits
Tap Score (SimpleLab) publishes that it works with a nationwide network of certified, independent laboratories, describes ISO 17025 accreditation and EPA/Standard Methods, and sells kits for city, well, and PFAS panels. That is a consumer-facing way to reach certified methods. It is one path.
It is not the only path. County health departments sometimes test wells or maintain lists. University extensions often know which local labs run iron, hydrogen sulfide, and bacteria. A lab you choose from the state list may be cheaper for a narrow panel (hardness, iron, pH, manganese) than a broad mail-in kit.

What to order so the matcher works
On city water, start with the CCR. Add a lab panel if you are shopping a health-effects claim (for example PFAS) that the CCR does not settle for your tap, or if household plumbing (lead) is the question.
On a private well, EPA’s baseline is annual total coliform, nitrates, TDS, and pH, plus extra tests when conditions match the table on the private-wells page: iron and manganese when fixtures stain; hydrogen sulfide when there is an objectionable smell; hardness when scale and soap are the complaint; metals and VOCs when land use suggests them.
Bring pH, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, hardness, TDS, and tannins to an iron/sulfur conversation. Bring the disinfectant type from the utility to a carbon conversation. Bring the sanitation-district rule to a softener conversation.
If the only document in the folder is a phone photo of a yellow vial, you do not have chemistry yet.
